Philosophy

In Katie's practice, you will be met with unconditional positive regard, a concept developed by the humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers. It is the basic acceptance and support of a person as they are, regardless of what they say or do

In the context of client-centered therapy, Rogers believed that for a person to "grow," they need an environment that provides them with genuineness (openness and self-disclosure), acceptance (being seen with unconditional positive regard), and empathy (being listened to and understood). Without these, relationships and healthy personalities will not develop as they should, much like a tree will not grow without sunlight and water.

Rogers also believed that humans have one basic motive, to self-actualize - i.e., to fulfill one's potential and achieve the highest level of 'human-beingness' we can. He saw the potential of the human as unique and viewed people as inherently good.

The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change. -Carl Rogers

Warm and engaging, Katie places great value on creating a safe environment conducive to self-discovery and change. She views her clients as unique and whole with an innate ability to heal already within them. She considers it an honor and a privilege to partner with her clients to facilitate change, helping them discover what is keeping them stuck, reprocessing and resolving these issues, freeing them to experience life and relationships in new and more meaningful ways.

Balance is achieved by living in harmony with our core values and with those around us.

Being trustworthy and living with integrity are fundamentally important. Living life on life's terms takes courage, perseverance, and humor. Compassion and self-acceptance are rewards. Life can become a gift and a wonderful adventure.

People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, "Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner." I don't try to control a sunset. -Carl Rogers

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. If you have made it this far, you have begun your healing journey. Are you tired of how you feel? Having difficulty sleeping? Low energy and lack of motivation? Easily startled or finding yourself avoiding painful memories? Katie can help. She provides comprehensive, compassionate psychotherapy services in the Roanoke Valley. With over 20 years experience in the field, Katie specializes in trauma-informed therapy. With the use of EMDR therapy and other modalities, she can help you identify, target, and process the root of your discomfort. What keeps you up at night now can become a distant memory.

While she draws from many therapeutic approaches, Katie is certified in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy. Evidence based, EMDR jump starts the brain's natural healing process without excessive talk and does not involve repeated re-experiencing of the trauma. Memories no longer hold an emotional charge, and you develop a more positive outlook.

Recovery can take place only within the context of relationships; it cannot occur in isolation. ~ Judith Herman
